6.9.10 - Painful and Fun Day. :)

Today I went to go get a shot at the doctor because I'm leaving for Canada this Sunday !
It was a flu shot and it stung a little. After our shot my sister and I went to the waiting room and watched TV when all of a sudden our mom came out and told us that we both still had one shot that we hadn't taken !
We went back inside and we had to get a Tetanus shot which hurt so much there were tears running down my cheeks. :S
When we got home my sister and I saw this guy selling FISH outside our house !! :) We decided we wanted pet fish so my sister and I picked two black fish and named them Midnight and Moon. I think this is the first time i've ever had a fish as a pet, and believe me i've had LOTS of pets.

I found this day fun even though I didn't spend any of it out doing something with friends.

Ask any question or You may lie ?

I'd rather ask any question because lying doesn't really matter but everyone wonders if they could ask a question without being rude and if they could ask a question knowing they'll get an answer. Lying is easy to some people's eyes, all they have to do is look at the person and lie but asking a question requires precision of language so you would get the answer you want. Lying sometimes has its advantages, like getting out of trouble etc. etc. etc. but asking a question can be so useful ! Because if you ask a question and you get an answer you can go so far with that, unlike lying. If I put myself in Jonas' shoes I would use the ability of asking as much questions as I want and getting an answer rather than lying since lying isn't so useful and according to Jonas in the book they were taught never to lie in their community.

Jonas' Journal Entry of what is happening so far in THE GIVER

I received my assignment today.
Or should I say I was "selected" today since I was "selected" as the new Receiver of Memory ?

I feel frightened of what the chief elder said, that I would have to experience PHYSICAL pain.

Even though she said that I am still brave enough to go through it all.

I do not know what I would become, or what would become of me.

CLIO advertisment deconstruction

Target Audience
Everyone

Why this advertisement won an award
This advertisement won an award because it showed awareness that not everybody wants the same thing and some people just want a home.

Elements:
Symbolism - The surroundings of the little kid in the box symbolize the horrible places on the street where some people live and how they deserve to have a home.
Body Language - The way the kid is lying down inside the box shapes just like the girl who's on the computer to show that some people get their brand new computer and all that kid gets is a cardboard home.
Camera Angles - The way the camera is pointing at the box is to the side and the reason for that is to show the body language they used for this picture which as I mentioned in the other element of body language, the picture shows how happy a girl is because she got a new computer on the side of the box while it shows the legs of a homeless child who is using that box as a home.
Lighting and Color - The way the lighting and color element was used was like this: nearing the bottom where it said the caption of the advertisement 'NOT ALL KIDS WANT THE SAME THING FOR CHRISTMAS' the color of the font was white while the cement behind the caption was black and as it went further up the advertisement the lighting became brighter so we could see the real point of the advertisement.
Layout - The arrangement of the items in this advertisement was made like this to be perfect. The way the box was put towards the left side so there would be more space for the legs of the child with a small amount of space in which the gate was placed with the graffiti piece right in the middle of the gate next to the worn out brick wall.

Crime: There was a fake kidnapping (they didn't know that until later) and a real murder.
Detectives: Sean and Gus.
Villain: Mr. McCallum
Victim: Mr. McCallum's son
Suspect: Mr. McCallum and the relative (son's accomplice for fake kidnapping)
Alibi: Mr. McCallum saying that his cut came from him trying to commit suicide because he missed his son so much and was sad when he went missing.
Witness: Son's dog.
Evidence: The bodies of the son and relative, the blood and piece of hair on the corner of the table, gun in the relatives hand, coffee mug on the floor, the bag where the ransom money was placed.
Clues: Dog's whiskers covered in blood, Mr. McCallum's sliced wrist, Medication recently prescripted for dog bites.
Red Herring: Katarina holding the same looking bag where the ransom money was placed filled with clothes for the thrift shop.
Suspense: When Sean explained everything to Mr. McCallum.
Surprise Ending: Mr. McCallum was the killer of his own son and relative.

Elements of a mystery. :)

Every mystery has a crime and the crime could be anything. Except the crime usually has a motive. So this picture shows that a crime has happened and that is why they put the tape to prevent people from going there.

Every crime also has an investigator or detective who solves the crime so this picture shows a detective with his magnifying glass ready to solve a crime.

ALL mysteries have villains or as some people call them bad guys. They are always there to start up the crime and do something wrong. Something illegal of course. That's why I picked this picture because he looks like a classic villain.

Every crime has evidence and in the case of this crime the evidence is a knife. The knife is a classic murder weapon because many murders include stabbing with some sort of knife.

Every mystery also has clues. Clues are the things that lead the investigator closer towards figuring out the crime. Sometimes the clues bring suspense to the audience for example the picture of footprints on the floor and they're marked there with blood.

Every crime always has a red herring. A red herring is something that throws an investigator the wrong way or further from solving the crime.

Monk !! :]

In english class we are doing an elements of a mystery unit so we watched MONK. We got the chance to see the elements of a mystery and the mystery was MONK and the voodoo curse.
It was interesting because there was only one crime even though three died and they suspected the owner of the voodoo shop was the murderer. There were also alibis but one of the alibis was a little bit hidden because no one really paid attention to it. Although the REAL victim of this crime was a man who was the uncle of a paramedic who works with a cellphone company. Anyway there was also a red herring in this mystery which were the two other victims (this is where the confusion clears up). The two other victims were an old woman named Martha (who was the first to die) and this other man (second to die) another red herring was that the killer made a voodoo doll for monks assistant/secretary to try and get monk distracted because he cared about her so much (her name was Natalie). There were many clues for example: when monk was at the uncles house he started looking around and realized that they had an upside down horseshoe above their door (upside down: all the luck falls out). All the clues led to the killer (of course) with the evidence which were the voodoo dolls. The old woman and the man were killed just by accident and the paramedic (ding!) was always there at every crime to try and revive each victim (do you get it ? The paramedic: the uncles niece, connection).
Near the end there was a car chase and monk suddenly put all of the pieces together and figured out the crime. The two murders before the uncle were just accidents and Angeline (the niece) sent an empty box to herself earlier and just waited until there was the right accident then she'd paste a new name on the box, decorate a voodoo doll, put it in the box, break into the person's house and placed it there making it look like it was sent 3 days or a week earlier because of the post mark. Then she murdered her uncle to get his money. She pretended he had a heart attack when all along she used an invisible drug to kill him and put lucky charms all over his house to make him look superstitious then when monk arrived she told him that she was upstairs and all of a sudden heard him scream and ran down to find him dead from a heart attack (the alibi that was a little hidden).
So in the end that was all cleared and we learned the elements of a mystery:
  • Crime : murder of the uncle
  • Problem solver/Investigator : Monk
  • Villain/Bad guy/girl : Angeline (niece of uncle)
  • Alibis : Angeline saying she was upstairs
  • Suspects : Shop owner (but before the movie ended they prove he's innocent)
  • Red Herring : other people that were murdered
  • Evidence : voodoo dolls
  • Clues : Angeline was at every crime scene (because she was a paramedic)
  • Steps/Procedures : Monk arrives at the crime then the police and him investigate
  • Surprise Ending : It was Angeline all along.

Plastiki ! :)

The plastiki is a very high tech boat that is made of 1200 gas filled recycled plastic bottles. It's a boat that is supposed to bring consciousness back to people so they can realize that they should start beating waste instead of live with it. The mission of this boat and its crew is to sail across the pacific from San Francisco until Sydney. Quoting the leader of this expedition David de Rothschild "We always wanted to create something that wasn't going to be just some sort of stunt. It wasn't just going to be a bag of bottles strapped together that we would be sitting on hoping that we would make it to the other side of the pacific." This is a boat made to show the obvious that waste is just living around us and we're not doing anything about it. The crew used solar power, fans and bicycles for an extra push on this boat and they hoped that maybe they would learn something from it after they got on shore. This boat also shows that the amount of electricity we use in our everyday lives and how much we need to reduce it. The plastiki technically shows us that we need to be me more eco-friendly because we're sending so much waste to the ocean and we're always wasting so much electricity when it's not needed. We need to reach deeper into ourselves and feel the same way the crew of the plastiki does. They're trying to make a point and the sooner we get it the better.

Journal Entry 2/2/10

Hey heyyy! :)

Subjects for the day: P.E., baking cookies and if I run out really quickly out of the blue thoughts.

P.E.:
Today P.E. was fun but tiring (as ALWAYSSS). Anyway there isn't a whole paragraph about P.E. this time so yippee for othersss. :P

Baking COOKIESSS. :D:
On sunday I baked cookies. The first batch were sooooooooo YUMMYYYY!!! Although the second batch weren't that great. You see the first batch were soft and moist, but the second batch was so HARD. So I decided that soft batch wins. In short 10 minute baked cookies are better than 12 minute baked. :P

Out of the blue THOUGHTS. :):
Well now it's out of the blue thoughts time. I just wanna clarify that this time I won't be as random. That's why I call it out of the blue THOUGHTS with a capital THOUGHTS. :D

1. I only have ummm around 5 minutes of thoughts to write.
2. Today in math/science class we were having lots of trouble reading our teachers cursive (cause she's gone and we have a sub so the sub put what she wrote on paper up on the projector and it was really hard to read. I guess she rushed it.)
3. All I hear now is fingers tapping on keyboards and kids talking loudly outside.
4. I guess the other class was sent early which always happens.
5. Unless it's just 8th graders.
6. I don't know why I put those things that are the same subject in different numbers.
7. About 2 more minutes of thoughts.
8. Our English sub is just staring at the clock waiting until it is exactly 1:55
9. I'm thinking of publishing now
10. Never mind. I'll publish when I must.
11. The clock keeps going tick tock tick tock.
12. In science class we're gonna have to copy more.
13. I know you think what? you had science. WRONG. Split block. so technically rightish.
14. I have to go!

BYEEE. :D

Journal Entry 1/27/10

Hey hey!
I was very proud of myself today when we played touch. I tryed (which means scored in touch rugby) THREE times! It was a pretty even game between blue and green. P.E. is a really fun subject and I like it. I don't know what to talk about now so I will write a bunch of random stuff on my blog (which is my favorite thing to do) and i'll stop when I have to.

Random sayings that pop in my head.
1. I got 100% in my science test YAYYY! :D
2. Cookies are yummy
3. I love P.E. and running but I hate feeling soooo tired after
4. I love the colors orange, yellow and green. (Not for any specific reasons just because I like bright things.)
5. Last week I walked into this bookstore and they had like authors sayings above the shelves and I saw one that said: "People always ask me, if you had to be stranded on an island with only one book which would it be? I would always answer, How To Build A Boat." :P
6. In our class we have a WALL OF WORDS and I just thought that those words must be real special to have their own wall. (Just Kidding! I had to say something I was running out! :P)
7. I don't like getting goosebumps and nightmares after watching scary movies. I'd actually like spending more time hiding behind the popcorn bucket than seeing people get killed or something.
8. I only have 2.5 minutes left to type random stuff.
9. I'm thinking of finishing this post and so that I can put back the computer.
10. I'm gonna do that now. :)

I'll post againnnnnn!!!!! =D

6 reasons why Haiti is a poor nation.

1. One reason why Haiti is so poor is because the French Plantation owners would make the Haitians work to death by growing things from indigo to sugar cane.

2. Another reason is that after they fought against slavery they were in a situation where they were considered a threat by the rest of the region because the rest of the region especially the United States because they own slaves which leads to not much support from the United States.

3. A third reason is that since the plantations have stopped, small money that the Haitians got from selling a bit of those crops were no longer there. Ergo, there was no money left for the education of Haitian children and less salary for the Haitians with jobs for there were no more supporters.

4. Reason four is that Haiti was seen increasingly as a terrible place mostly because of the racism people have against the Haitians. They judge them by skin color since most of the regions around them are light skinned.

5. Haiti started from a point of considerably greater illiteracy and lack of human and natural resources. The other thing that was happening was that those small scale farmers were doing other things. They were using charcoal for heating and cooking and essentially denuding the hills and forests, which now means they have major erosion problems throughout Haiti.

6. The Haiti region is a region that doesn't have industrial skills therefore the region is not able to trade their products in any significant way.

Journal Entry - 1/20/10

Hey Journal and People of all Universe. I would like to talk about running in the rain. Yesterday we had P.E. and we played touch rugby. We were all having fun when suddenly we heard pounding on the other side of the field. We looked. Suddenly our P.E. teacher asked if it was rain. It was in fact. We ran all the way undercover so we couldn't get wet but some of us wanted to get wet (including me and my friends) so we stood under the rain kicked rain at each other and ran a whole lap arount the track while it was pouring. We were soaking and we liked it. We did cartwheels all at once. It was the best P.E. day ever. After it stopped raining we played a class game of touch rugby. It was really fun but when it started drizzling again and soon enough pounding we stopped the lesson (mainly because it was practically finished.) It was a blast and I will never forget that.

New Subject - Random. (I don't know what to write about so random things will pop in my mind and I will type it)

1. My friend is leaving and I wrote her a SUPER DUPER long note about how much i'll miss her and I was tearing up.
2. On two of my other blogs I talk about how bad Haiti needs help. (Be sure to check that out)
3. I'm in class right now. (but this isn't against the rules it's Journal Entry time in class so don't go bazerk. =D)
4. Our class is reading a book called PEAK and it's really good. (read it.)

Well i've got to go now journal time is up. Talk to you next time!
ME. =D

Haiti Update

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

I made this post so that people may read about what is happening in haiti so far. Many people think that Haiti has gotten better since it has been about a week since the Earthquake struck Haiti but sadly they are very wrong. There are still hundreds of people injured and waiting for care even though there are people who are already taking action. As you can see in the picture above there were many people who suffered from the Earthquake and died. It seems like maybe half of those people died not from the Earthquake but from the injuries they got from the Earthquake. It feels like there weren't enough helpers to cure the sicknesses of the Haitians. The picture above may also be a little bit unclear because of all the dirt mixing with the bodies as they fall into a large grave for many Haitians.

Haiti Earthquake

On January 13, 2010 an Earthquake struck in Haiti. Haiti is in the Caribbean near the country of Mexico. Reporters say that many people were injured during the Earthquake. Red Cross also says that 3 million people were affected by this very Earthquake. The Earthquake, which struck about 15 km (10 miles) south-west of Port-au-Prince, was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude. A French official told AFP about 200 people were missing in the collapsed Hotel Montana, which is popular with tourists. There have also been some reports of looting overnight. Rachmani Domersant an operations manager with the Food for the Poor charity, told Reuters that overnight the capital was in total darkness. "You have thousands of people sitting in the streets with nowhere to go. There are people running, crying, screaming." He says.

In a statement issued in New York, the UN said that its local HQ in Haiti had "sustained serious damage along with other UN installations" and "a large number" of personnel were missing. UN peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy said it was unclear how many people were in the building. The head of the UN mission in Haiti, Hedi Annabi, was reported to have been inside and is unaccounted for. French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said he was believed to be dead. The UN's stabilisation mission plays a vital role in ensuring security in Haiti. Raymond Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the US, said the presidential palace, the tax office, the ministry of commerce and the foreign ministry had all been damaged, but the airport was intact. He and Haiti's ambassador to Mexico, Robert Manuel, both said that President Rene Preval and his wife had survived the quake.

The Earthquake struck Haiti Leaving people homeless and with nothing to do. The shock many people got from the Earthquake also affected their mental health leaving them not just sad but very depressed. The people of Haiti are depressed because their homes were most probably destroyed or they lost loved ones. Word is that some kids would wait for their parents after school but their parents would never come because they passed on during the Earthquake. As shown in the picture above this woman is most definitely left with nothing to do, no home, no family and very depressed. That is what Earthquakes can do to others. It is very sad to watch things like this happen to other people because of a natural disaster.

My Holiday

Christmas -
On Christmas Eve my relatives from my mom's side came to our house and we stayed up until 12 midnight and then we opened our presents. The whole time we were waiting though, my sister, my cousins and I were walking around our neighborhood watching other kids play with fireworks and running away from them. We also just sat down in an area and watched people carol. It was very fun. On the real Christmas Day my family and I visited our relatives from my dad's side. We had a party and I saw most of my cousins. We talked a lot about different things. Later on we opened presents again. It was a nice get together to see our relatives again and celebrate the day Jesus was born.

Airport Troubles -
My family and I went to Boracay before New Years so we could celebrate it there. Although we had a little trouble at the airport with the booking. The whole reason our family started fighting was because Cebu Pacific (the airlines we took) OVERBOOK
ED us! We booked our flight and paid for it way back in June and they delayed our flight! They were telling my parents that they sent us an email saying that our flight was delayed but we never received one so my parents were asking for a copy to prove them right. Since we didn't get our email we thought that our flight was still at 10:20 so we were at the airport at 8:00 a.m. They said the flight was delayed for TWO HOURS. My parents didn't go down without a fight. They kept asking what are we going to do here for 4 hours?!?! We were a group of six with my grandparents, parents, my sister and me. They told us to come back at ten and they would tell us if they got us in the flight so we waited and at ten we went there and they said they couldn't get us on the flight. My parents told them that they HAD to get us on that flight even if it means taking seats from people who are late for the flight so they kept trying and they did get six seats but they had to bump out 2 people for that. But the people ended up coming and they started fighting for their seats and the lady from Cebu Pacific was saying that only 5 people can get on the plane and 1 person has to be left behind but we wouldn't budge. So after a long time of fighting with Cebu Pacific we ended up getting the delayed flight
. We weren't sad because even though we got the delayed flight we still pressured them and fought for our rights so we were still happy. :)

New Years -
On New Years we were in Boracay and when we went out of our hotel r
oom there was a band playing in front of our hotel! Everyone was singing along, dancing and wal
king on the beach front. We greeted family friends Happy New Year in the hotel next to us and then we watched the fireworks. They were so pretty! When the fireworks were still going we went to go watch a guy spin fire on those fire baton things. Straight after he finished a bunch of fireworks started popping and my sister and I were so scared we were running back to our hotel. While we were dancing in front of our hotel a guy went to the very front right where the band was and when most people cleared out because they were tired he started doing the WORM! It was very cool. Straight after he got up another guy ran past everyone to the very fro
nt and did a FRONT HANDSPRING! It was amazing! When we went back to our hotel room my sister and I stayed in the room watching dvds all night. (technically morning from like 1 a.m. u
ntil 2 a.m. I was exaggerating.) :)
